She went on to play in the Australian netball team from 1992 until 2007, and was captain for her final four years on the court. She is Australias most capped international player and has won the countrys Most Valued Player Award four times. Lizs career continued to soar after her retirement from the game she is now a well-known media identity and runs coaching clinics for the next generation of netballers. When did you first realise you would be able to make a career out of netball? It was after I finished university a nd had been working as a lawyer for four years. I was quite determined law was what I wanted to do, but after working for four years I realised it wasnt something I was particularly gifted at and I didnt love it. I loved playing netball so I thought I could perhaps make a career in that field. I never actually plotted out a career path, everything just sort of evolved. How did you move into professional netball? When I started at the National League level, we were totally amateur. We didnt get paid at all. In my final year, I only got paid $8000 for playing for my club, so there never was a career for me as a professional player like there is for the girls now. I was able, however, to build my career around what I did on the court. It enabled me to plug into certain things like coaching clinics, media work, speaking engagements and sponsors, and I wrote a couple of books. Any athlete will tell you that through your athletic career, regardless of what sport youre in, you make some gr eat contacts and if youre strategic about how you do that, there are opportunities that arise from that. How have the opportunities been boosted? The main change is the ANZ Championship. The top players in the club teams now are able to earn enough money by playing netball full time. The junior players arent quite at the level yet where they can stop working. What has been your career highlight to date? Probably my final game, which was captaining Australia at the World Championships final and winning. We had worked towards that moment for several years, so to actually have it come off in fantastic fashion with a great team was awesome Whats day-to-day life like for a netball player? We trained together as a team three times a week, two court sessions and a fitness session, and then we would play once a week. Every second weekend would involve interstate travel. It was fairly hectic and our training sessions had to be supplemented by our own home training sessions. Day-to-day traini ng was pretty routine, but my days were always different because I had different commitments. What are the bad bits about being a netballer? I dont have a lot of cartilage left in my knee, but Id rather have no cartilage than give up all the great memories and experiences Ive had. I guess there are a lot of sacrifices if you want to be a professional athlete its something that engulfs your whole life. Every meal you eat, youre thinking about it, it curbs your social life because you cant afford to go out and party and still be able to train at that elite level. I missed out on lots of family and friends parties and weddings simply because if you make that commitment to your team, the team comes first. However, that gets made up by the time you spend with a great group of people and the unique experiences you have. What has your career evolved into now? I run netball coaching clinics during school holidays, I coach for the Macquarie Foundation, I commentate netball for ONE HD and Ch annel 10, and I still have all of my sponsors from when I was playing so I have plenty of work to do with them, like the Nestle commercial which is on at the moment. Its evolved into a really nice career. Have your former teammates gone down similar paths to you? No. A lot of girls I played with were tertiary educated, so they are physios, doctors and accountants. Certainly from my generation of players, I was the only one who made a career out of netball. A lot of the girls used the opportunity when they were playing to educate themselves and have careers outside the sport. What advice do you have for people who are thinking about a career in netball? Certainly follow your dreams someone has to play netball for Australia so it may as well be you I think its a fantastic goal to have, but like any elite sport, I would also advise people to keep an eye on their education educate yourself as far as you can, simply because one day your sporting career will be over. My law degree is my backup and it gives me plenty of peace of mind to know its available if I need it. Whos your role model? Keeley Devery. The sessions included in the Congress Advanced Manufacturing, Energy, Fluids Engineering Systems and Technologies, Materials and Micro- and Nano-Systems Engineering and Packaging tracks will examine cutting-edge advances in areas such as nanomanufacturing material processing of flexible electronic devices and solutions electrochemical energy conversion and storage fuel cell systems design and application nanomaterials and nanostructures for energy applications. The NEES Group has also organized several invited talks taking place from Tuesday through Thursday. Through his books and his recorded lectures, he touched on almost every major contradiction in life.His signature teaching and he applied it to almost every part of existence was that there is no end or destination. In his own wordsYou are involved by and large in a very strange business system which divides your day into work and play. Work is something that everybody does and you get paid to do it because nobody could care less about doing it.In other words, it is so abominable and boring that you can get paid for doing it. And the object of doing this is to make money. And the object of making money, is to go home and enjoy the money that youve made. When you got it, you landsee, you can buy pleasure.No Such Thing As WorkNaturally, Watts definition of work doesnt apply to every job each one of us does. That said, the underlying theory of the role of work in modern society, though extreme, is largely right.Biologically, there is no such thing as a set requirement to do a set amount of work. Were programmed to strive for things and to struggle for survival, which itself is one definiti on of work, but overall, the concept of sacrificing time for money is a cultural construct.Weve created arbitrary distinctions to keep the economic machine running, which isnt necessarily bad, but its forced a mental contrast between the things that were supposed to enjoy and the things that we do in order to maintain our ability to do things that we enjoy.When we think of something as work, we automatically compare it to leisure, and by definition, if its the opposite of leisure, we think that its bedrngnis something that gets to be enjoyed.Even if you have a job that satisfies all of your criteria for keeping you engaged and excited, this ingrained narrative that youre workingwhen youre doing that thing causes you to see your tasks and your demands as things that are enforced on you rather than chosen.Choice is an essential requirement in humans for a feeling of motivation and control, and our distinction of certain commitments as work completely strips that away from us.Given tha t we all have to make a living and that doing so is going to demand a big chunk of our time, its valuable to think of ways that we can make this time as pleasant as possible.Granted, not all circumstances enable an environment to see work as something other than that. That said, by merely taking a more fluid approach to the commitments in your life by reducing overt contrasts between what you enjoy and what you dont, you can make it better.The Real Secret Is PlayAnother way to complement a lack of distinction is to see everything you do as play.Humans are playful by nature. While many of us give up the dolls and the action figures as we age, most of the activities that we consider enjoyable throughout the years, whether it be reading, creating, or exercise, are a form of play. Theyre a kind of game that we engage in.We choose to deliberately focus our attention on something, we strive to get the most out of it that we possibly can, and if we do it well, we get completely lost in a w orld of joy and awe.The medium of play, although important, isnt really crucial. The underlying pattern of behavior is something that exists as a default and innate ability in our mind. It may come easier if you have a habit of enjoying a task, but it can be harnessed with effort regardless.This is something that Alan Watts advocated throughout his life. We get so caught up with existing definitions that we forget that the boundary between work and play is illusionary.Nothing in the world is inherently interesting. Things are interesting because we take the time and effort to make them interesting. If you have a fluid definition of work and leisure, then much of the time you can turn whatever the job is into play by gamifying it.If you practice a kind of presence about being where you are rather than waiting to get out of a task in the near future, and if you design the circumstances around your demands to be somewhat challenging, then there is no reason that you cant enjoy the time that pays you.This mentality also saves you from getting caught up in the rat race to nowhere. You play because its enjoyable, not because youre chasing some imagined destination of success.All You Need to KnowAlan Watts passed away in 1973, but much of his wisdom lives on in all corners of the world.You dont have to agree with everything he believed to see that there is merit in his argument about the flaws in the modern concept of work. Its something that takes up more of our time than almost anything else in life, and yet, its also a major source of human misery.We contrast it with leisure, and as a result, we treat it like a thing thats the opposite of leisure. Often that may indeed be the case for many of us. That said, it doesnt help that weve created a false cultural narrative that thrives on a distinction rather than integration.If you see your life more fluidly as a commitment of responsibilities, and if you can treat these commitments as play, there is no reason work has to be a source of dissatisfaction.In fact, things you enjoy are interesting because, at some point, you took the time and energy to make them interesting. If you appropriately gamify your work, you can do the same there.If you happen to be in a position where its not possible to enjoy your work, maybe its time to make a change. Naturally, everyone has bills to pay and personal responsibilities. That said, if you can cover the basics, its at least worth considering alternative options.
